It was only paper,
so it flew out of her bag,
billowing in the wind,
so light, yet so heavy,

It was only paper,
but it was demanded attention
as it drifted over the ripples of people,
commanding them like the moon commands the ocean

It was only paper,
yet it tugged at her soul
so she chased it across Wall Street
and she could see nothing else,
not the people
not the sights
not the nature
just the paper

It was only paper,
but it was green
so it had value-
Some paper is worth more than other paper

It was only paper,
but she decided it was valuable
so she chased it up mountains
and down valleys
through cities
across towns
and she was so tired

It was only paper,
but it’s a manmade prison,
a prison that can be torn
but never will be

it was only paper,
she realized,
as she fell
six feet under
